Rosman, Penalva, Souza Leão, Franco, Vale’s senior partner Coaraci Nogueira do Vale planned, initiated and implemented a program for a visit to Brazil of Mark A. Cymrot, leader of the North American law firm BakerHostetler’s International Arbitration and Litigation Team, counsel and arbitrator in complex international arbitration and litigation, a member of esteemed international arbitration panels, and a fellow, Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. Mr. Cymrot is also an advisor to the American Law Institute, Restatement (Fourth) of Foreign Relations Law, on Sovereign Immunity, ranked by Chambers & Partners as a Band 1 international arbitrator, The Best Lawyers in America© (International Arbitration) and is listed in “Who’s Who in America”. He has published “Squeezing Silver: Peru’s Trial Against Nelson Bunker Hunt” and numerous articles on arbitration and litigation issues.

The plan was initially presented one year ago to the President of CESA – Center of Studies of Law Firms that congregates nearly 1,200 Brazilian law firms and earlier this year it was endorsed unanimously by the directors of CESA. The President of CESA, Carlos José (Cajé) Santos da Silva extended an invitation to Mr. Cymrot to speak on the 24th at the CESA September meeting of members and designated Gisela Ferreira Mation, from Machado Meyer and Renato Stephan Grion, from Pinheiro Neto, heads of the CESA Arbitration Committee, to lead the effort on behalf of CESA.

Taking advantage of his presence in Brazil, Mr. Cymrot visited on Monday the São Paulo office of Rosman, Penalva, Souza Leão, Franco, Vale and met with a team of attorneys from the firm and from other affiliate firms and was interviewed on Monday by the electronic magazine CONSULTOR JURÍDICO (CONJUR) that specializes in legal matters and attracts about 3.0 million accesses per month by members of the legal and business community in Brazil. On Tuesday morning, Mr. Cymrot made a presentation to students at the Presbyterian Mackenzie University Law School, an event organized by Prof. Daniel Tavela Luis and moderated by Gisela Ferreira Mation and Lucas Alves Evaristo dos Santos on the subject “Differences in Common Law and Civil Law in International Arbitration”.

On the same day, Mr. Cymrot had lunch at the law firm Pinheiro Neto, at the invitation of Gilberto Giusti with a team of distinguished young attorneys specializing in Litigation and Arbitration.

Later in the day, Mr. Cymrot spoke at CESA to a large audience of distinguished attorneys, including practitioners in Litigation and Arbitration and attorneys who practice in different areas of the law from law firms that are members of CESA, and other guests. The event was moderated by Gisela Ferreira Mation from Machado Meyer, Gilberto Giusti, from Pinheiro Neto and Flávia Filhorini Lepique, counselor of SINSA. I was honored to have been invited to sit with the members of the panel that was chaired by Cajé.

On Wednesday, Mr. Cymrot and senior partner Coaraci Nogueira do Vale visited the Rio de Janeiro Office of Rosman, Penalva, Souza Leão, Franco, Vale and met with partners Paulo Penalva, Luciano de Souza Leão, Ary Franco Neto, Luiz Henrique Ferreira Leite, Pedro Wehrs do Vale Fernandes and Pedro Birman.

The presentation at CESA was translated competently by Prof. Luciana Ferreira do Amaral and the event was competently organized by Silvia Naufal, CESA’s executive secretary.
